![]() ![]() Open-angle glaucoma is the most common form. A healthy optic nerve is necessary for good vision. (See diagram below.) The retina is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. The optic nerve is a bundle of more than 1 million nerve fibers. However, with early treatment, you can often protect your eyes against serious vision loss. Glaucoma occurs when the normal fluid pressure inside the eyes slowly rises. Glaucoma is a group of diseases that can damage the eye’s optic nerve and result in vision loss and blindness. If they leak blood, severe vision loss and even blindness can result. By themselves, these blood vessels do not cause symptoms or vision loss. They grow along the retina and along the surface of the clear, vitreous gel that fills the inside of the eye. These new blood vessels are abnormal and fragile. This condition is called proliferative retinopathy. At this advanced stage, the signals sent by the retina for nourishment trigger the growth of new blood vessels. These areas of the retina send signals to the body to grow new blood vessels for nourishment. Many more blood vessels are blocked, depriving several areas of the retina with their blood supply. As the disease progresses, some blood vessels that nourish the retina are blocked.
